Win A Soy Candle Package!

I have been deeply  involved in researching and writing about how the chemicals we use in our homes and on our bodies cause breast cancer. In doing so, I could not leave out one of the most common yummy, yet harmful, culprits: candles. All the research led to the urgency of us switching over our conventional candles to pure soy or beeswax. (see below for why) I decided in the midst of all this research, to give away two soy candle packages. Now we can get thisNaked Moxie  party going and switch to soy!

Your Candles May be Harming  Your Family

Are you a candle lover? I am. I just love their sense of warmth and yummy smells. There is something about a lit candle saying ” We are home, safe and warm.” Companies have bombarded us with absolutely wonderful smells. Sugar cookie, vanilla, pumpkin, cinnamon, and even birthday cake are some examples. How they grab a hold of the scent of rain or cotton is beyond me.

There is an underlying problem we need to stay aware of as mothers and it is a sneaky one. Most candles are loaded with harmful chemicals and when lit, these cancer causing creatures emanate into the air we breathe. For example, most candles are made from paraffin wax which is a wax laced with cancerous chemicals. Toluene and benzene are two other cancerous causing monsters in our oh so wonderful candles. These chemicals are linked to breast cancer, but also have been known to be the cause of asthma attacks and household allergies. Indeed our candles aren’t so yummy. We are most at risk the more we light them, so if you use conventional candles often, you are at a higher risk for cancer. Ugh!

That is just the icing on the cake! Candles with metal  lead wicks are very dangerous to the health of our family, especially our children. Lead is actually emitted into the air and will deposit itself onto the walls, floors and furniture in your home. Not only do children inhale the lead, but it will transfer from the furniture to their hands and unfortunately, into their mouths and onto their skin. High levels of lead are linked to health conditions suh as ADD/ADHD as well as of the kidney and gall bladder. Not good!

What do I do?

Switch to candles made from soy or beeswax.  They do not emit cancerous chemicals since they do not burn at such high temperatures as paraffin candles do. Make sure you purchase a 100% soy candle with a lead free wick and natural fragrances . Many candle companies use a soy blend which is a mixture of paraffin and soy wax. This mixture still emits harmful chemicals. Soy candles with cotton or paper wicks  have been reported to be safer and just as yummy!

Look around your house. How many conventional candles do you have? Would you try a soy or beeswax candle instead?
